It looks like Burnham has secured the premiership. But what about LP

Andy Burnham has secured the Labour Party leadership with the overwhelming support of MPs. The arrival of 27 additional nominations means it has become impossible for any other candidate to enter the leadership race… The Guardian

Burnham has already established himself—both in the media and among the public—as the next prime minister; even the media describes him as being in a position where his premiership is all but guaranteed. They have already forgotten about Keir Starmer.

In addition to the backing of numerous MPs, Andy Burnham appears to have secured the support of Chancellor Reeves as well. While Burnham inspires hope among party members, it is too early to say whether the same holds true for the general public.

Older voters, in particular, harbor deep anger; they are inclined to give a new party a chance because, to them, the Keir Starmer government is a villainous entity. Mention the Labour Party to them, and they recall soaring energy bills, cuts to their wages, and reductions in their benefits. A few more negative experiences have been added to the memories of a demographic that already dwells on the past.

Andy Burnham needs to work a miracle. The situation for small businesses, in particular, is dire; high-street shops are closing one by one. Immigrants from countries like Bangladesh, Poland, Canada, and Türkiye have begun returning to their homelands. Not only is the economy in a terrible state, but the rise of the far right has prompted them to move their assets back to their home countries.

Will a miracle happen? We shall see…
