Should the death penalty be applied to politicians who plunder their country?

The death penalty is back on the agenda in South Korea: but this time prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for former leader Yoon. Although the death penalty exists in South Korean law, the country has not carried it out for almost thirty years,CNA reported

Does the South Korean public want the death penalty for former president Yoon? Prosecutors do, but what about them?

Some call the death penalty “barbaric,” but others defend it. While the death penalty was abolished in Europe long ago, it remains one of the most important deterrents in other parts of the world. This punishment is especially unthinkable for leaders who plunder the country or deliberately divide society to stay in power.

Yet, it is a known fact that one of the main causes of today’s problems in the world is politicians. Politics and politicians are at the forefront of making the world uninhabitable, destroying the environment, and causing deforestation.

Especially in countries like South Korea and Turkey, a proper form of punishment has yet to be found for leaders who come to power through democracy but resort to any means to stay in power. All of these leaders remain in power, or try to, by resorting to the same methods. Saddam, Assad, Gaddafi were just a few examples. But the world didn’t belong to them either; they left behind both suffering and rebellion in their countries.

In South Korea, the death penalty is now being sought for the former president. Although the death penalty exists in the laws, it hasn’t been implemented, so they may not be able to apply it to Yoon either. However, it’s very beneficial for politicians to know that such a method of punishment exists. In fact, it wouldn’t hurt for them to know that not only they themselves, but also their close associates, could face this punishment. Even if there’s no penalty, knowing that their relatives will also face some form of punishment might steer them towards a more honorable path. No leader can be held solely responsible. Those around them should be held accountable within a certain legal system.
