It is necessary to protect the public against MP’s and politician
The newly established national democracy protection unit is providing expert support to police forces to deal with the increasing threats and harassment against members of parliament. But before that support, another problem needs to be addressed.
Why are threats against members of parliament constantly increasing? Without answering this question, it will be impossible to find solutions. Providing extra protection to members of parliament is not a long-term solution. A government that cannot prevent theft even in its own large stores cannot prevent threats against members of parliament. Members of parliament must create an environment where they can protect themselves before the police do.
If they cannot provide the necessary services to the people who voted for them and put them in parliament, if they do not listen to them, if they cannot solve their problems, if they cannot ensure that problems are brought to parliament for resolution, then the likelihood of facing increasing backlash will also increase.
Instead of providing privileged protection to members of parliament, it would be much better to change the law to: ‘Members of parliament must serve the people in their constituencies, listen to their problems, and show that they value them.’ That would be much wiser.
The real problem is this: Politicians are becoming a truly significant problem for countries around the world. While politicians who receive votes from the people try to change every legal form to make themselves privileged, it’s even possible to see members of parliament retiring after only three years by changing the retirement law. In a poor country like Turkey, someone who serves as a member of parliament for three years can receive a lifetime pension, with all the state’s resources at their disposal.
The important thing is this: Politics should be made a service to the people, not given extraordinary powers to members of parliament. The people should both pay their salaries and live in worse conditions than them.
The police should actually be protecting the people from politicians; that’s the right thing to do!
