London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan said he was “disgusted and appalled” by images of some Metropolitan Police officers at Charing Cross police station following the revelations of the BBC’s Panorama documentary.
In footage recorded by Panorama’s undercover reporter, on-duty Metropolitan Police officers called for migrants to be shot and said they reveled in the use of force.
Meanwhile, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the sexually explicit comments made by officers to colleagues and the racist views they shared about migrants, especially Muslims, as “disturbing” and “sickening.”
It’s difficult to understand the reason for this increasing police hatred of migrants. The targeting of Muslims, in particular, is also intriguing. In recent years, Muslims have been particularly prominent in the Gaza protests, and it appears some police officers are uneasy about this. Police, especially in London, are having no success. Street crime rates are steadily rising. People are stabbed to death every day, but some police officers’ concerns are about immigrants and Muslims. Police must first do their job and ensure crime rates are reduced. Racism is not one of the police’s duties.
