A dark comedy has begun to unfold in the country. The farce, which began with the government’s immigration policies, has now spread to the Ministry of Justice. The Ministry of Justice announced today that 91 prisoners were released by mistake between April 1st and October 31st.
We are faced with a ministry that doesn’t even protect its own prisons, can’t even count its own prisoners, and doesn’t even know when to release its own prisoners. Police apprehend and imprison criminals, courts issue the necessary rulings and send them to prison, but the Ministry of Justice and its prisons mistakenly release these prisoners.
If prisons are going to constantly release prisoners by mistake, then neither the courts nor the police are truly important. Rather than simply releasing the numbers, the Ministry of Justice should explain the reason for these mistaken releases. How can a prisoner be released by mistake? This needs to be explained first.
The Ministry of Justice should then either reform itself or abolish itself.
