According to information obtained by the BBC, Home Minister Shabana Mahmood will announce a major overhaul of the immigration and asylum system later this month. She will model some of her new measures on the Danish system, which is considered one of the strictest in Europe.
According to the Danish system, authorities are examining Denmark’s strict rules on family reunification, which prevent most refugees from staying in the country temporarily. Mahmood wants to reduce the incentives that attract people to the UK while facilitating the deportation of those who have no right to be in the country.
Will the Danish method work? Since the system has brought the immigration problem under control in Denmark, we can achieve similar results here. But it primarily depends on the government’s commitment. All governments have talked about and tried to restrict immigration, but none have succeeded because they didn’t want to.
The question is: Why do we always have to borrow from somewhere else? Can’t we develop our own method by evaluating similar countries around the world? Do we have to borrow from other countries? Furthermore, the real problem lies not with migrants within the country but with undocumented migrants arriving in the country by boat. There is a huge increase in the number of immigrants coming to this country by boat every year. The real problem is to end these crossings.
