Can the UK become a member of the European Union from outside?

The German President drew a parallel between his country’s post-Brexit ties with the United Kingdom and the recent reunion of the famous Oasis brothers.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier stated that disappointment and uncertainty followed the UK’s departure from the EU, but that both sides had decided “not to dwell on these feelings.”

Steinmeier’s visit to the UK on a state visit could actually signal a parallel EU membership. Given the low likelihood of the UK becoming an EU member again, both the EU and the UK could develop a new membership system. Perhaps they have already, but they are trying to prepare the public.

King Charles’s state ceremony welcoming the German President could be the most significant sign of this. Another sign is Prime Minister Starmer’s statement that Brexit was a big mistake.

Germany, along with France, is one of the two most important members of the EU. A decision by both countries implies the approval of other member states. While France has not yet expressed its desire for a new membership, which is still possible, it is unlikely to reject the UK. Europe without the UK would be incomplete. These two countries know this best.

Conclusion: Even if the UK doesn’t rejoin the EU, it can be incorporated into the system as a new, single member from outside.
