US President Donald Trump has abandoned his plan to impose a 10% tariff on goods from eight European countries that oppose his annexation of Greenland. In a social media post, Trump says he has “formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland” after talks with NATO’s secretary general.
Trump finally saw the truth. The USA cannot exist without Europe. The USA needs Europe much more than Europe needs the USA. Trump is dependent on Europe for world politics, but because his emotions are controlling his mind, he was unlikely to see this, and he didn’t.
His decision to abandon the tariffs after meeting with the NATO secretary general shows that Trump realized his unilateral tariff decision was foolish. Most likely, the NATO secretary general told him that without Europe, Israel’s security in the region cannot be ensured. Without Europe, NATO cannot survive. Without Europe, Russia’s expansionist policies cannot be prevented. Without Europe, the USA is alone in the world. What makes it strong is not its military power, but its allies.
Trump’s decision to drop the tariffs could mean he’s also temporarily giving up on Greenland.
